Highwood Coffee El Cinco

Colombia Organic Huila Pitalito is sourced from family-owned farms organized around Coffee Origen Grupo Orgánico Sur Del Huila, a selection of 109 producers who live within the municipalities of Isnos, San Agustín, Pitalito, and Acevedo in the department of Huila, Colombia. El Cinco is a mountain with in this region close to San Agustin. Grupo Orgánico Sur Del Huila is focused on quality organic coffee production and establishing direct trade relationships. 

Traceability

• Grupo Orgánico Sur Del Huila works in collaboration with an export company called Lohas Beans to establish connections in the specialty coffee market, which has improved coffee prices for its members and enables farmers to reinvest in their farms and provide for their families. Lohas Beans has also helped producers gain access to technical support for best agricultural practices and innovative coffee processing methods.

Highwood Bio

Highwood Coffee is a specialty coffee roaster in Calgary Alberta Canada. Our main goals are sustainability, Community enrichment and quality.

Sustainability

- Bull Frog power; We purchase renewable energy from Bullfrog Energy to offset our grid use. This powers our office and plug in electric vehicle.

- Terracycle; Currently we send as many coffee bags as we can to Terracycle for full recycling of the coffee bags. We have not yet found a shelf stable (6+ month) biodegradable coffee bag. Until technology catches up we’ll continue to send bags back for proper recycling. We ask all of our customers to drop off used bags or put their used bags in the mail box and let us know to grab them while doing deliveries.

- One Tree Planted.org; We know that planting trees helps our environment in many ways. If you didn’t know James is also a plumber and strongly believes that Canada’s water supply must be kept as pristine as possible. Tree’s do just that. Trees play a key role in capturing rainwater and reducing the risk of natural disasters like floods and landslides. Their intricate root systems act like filters, removing pollutants and slowing down the water’s absorption into the soil. This process prevents harmful waterslide erosion and reduces the risk of over-saturation and flooding. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Association, a mature evergreen tree can intercept more than 15,000 litre’s of water every year.

Community enrichment

- Highwood Coffee Trade name for James Cruickshank sole proprietor gives back to our community in many ways. Volunteering in the community, charitable donations (most recently Trellis Calgary) We also intend to help organizations fundraise. Keep a look out for a new fundraising site in the near future. Organizations we’ve been talking with include Scouts, Trellis and Local Athletes in the sport of cycling.

Quality

- We have put many checks in place to ensure quality coffee. Without quality we would not be able to help our community, enjoy a decent coffee… Lets face it we all want a great tasting coffee! Our goal of 80+ SCA specialty coffee is what drives us. We also have a freshness guarantee. 0-8 weeks regular price after 8 weeks it goes on sale and after 12 weeks it’s donated. Check the shelves at Co-op most bags of coffee there are 12 weeks + old This is the reason why we started Highwood Coffee. We wanted quality fresh coffee. For example our Mountain Roast is roasted every 3-4 weeks. It’s our most popular coffee. We would love if we were so busy a complete roast sells out in 1-2 weeks but that’s at least a couple years out we think. For now Quality is top of mind every time we sell a bag.
